Elīna Garanča Receives National Excellence Award in Culture 2019


On November 28, Elīna Garanča received the National Excellence Award in Culture from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia. The mezzo soprano was honored for her outstanding performances in the world’s leading opera houses and with the world most prominent orchestras, as well as her contribution to Latvian music, cultural life and international standing.

First introduced in 2014, the National Excellence Award in culture has been presented to various Lativan artists and institutions, including as opera singer Aleksandrs Antoņenko, film director Jānis Nords, animator and film director Signe Baumane, organist Iveta Apkalna, stage designer Andris Freibergs, the Turaida Museum Reserve, artists Rasa Šmite and Raitis Šmits, the Žanis Lipke Memorial, conductor Andris Nelsons, violinist Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica, theater director Alvis Hermanis and others. Other recipients of 2019 award are ballet dancer Anna Laudere and art historian and painter Imants Lancmanis.
