Elīna Garanča Opens the 2018/2019 Metropolitan Opera Season with Samson et Dalila
On September 24, Elīna Garanča opens the 2018/2019 Metropolitan Opera Season, making her house role debut as Dalila in Saint-Saën’s Samson et Dalila.
Elīna last performed at the Met as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, a performance hailed by The New York Times as “a revelation.” Octavian marked a significant transition in the Latvian mezzo-soprano’s career, as she bid farewell to the trouser roles of her repertoire. In the past two seasons, Elīna has made multiple major role debuts in the dramatic mezzo-soprano repertoire, including Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Princess Eboli in Don Carlo, and most recently, Dalila in Samson et Dalila at Wiener Staatsoper.
Now, Elīna brings her Dalila to the esteemed Metropolitan Opera, opening the Metropolitan Opera Season in a new production by Tony Award-winning director Darko Tresnjak (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder). Tenor Roberto Alagna joins her as Samson, alongside Laurent Naouri (High Priest), Elchin Azizov (Abimélech) and Dmitry Belosselskiy (The Old Hebrew). Sir Mark Elder conducts this first new Met production of the work in 20 years.
Performances continue September 28; October 1, 5, 9, 13, 16, and 20. On October 20, the performance will be transmitted to cinemas worldwide as part of the Met Live in HD series. Find a cinema near you.
