Summer Highlights from Europe

This summer, over 7,500 fans witnessed Elīna Garanča’s concert debuts as Amneris from Aida and Princess Eboli from Don Carlo at the annual open-air concert series, Klassik unter Sternen and Klassik in den Alpen. Conducted by Karel Mark Chichon, these concerts featured 120 artists on stage, including Barbara Frittoli, Alfred Kim, the Choir of the Slovak National Theater, and the Volksoper Symphony Orchestra.

On July 16, Elīna returned to Opéra national de Paris to sing the title role in Carmen, a role for which The New York Times praised Elīna’s “alluring sensuality”. Elīna was joined by Roberto Alagna as Don José in a new production directed by Calixto Bieito and conducted by Mark Elder.

Following her Paris performance as Carmen, Elīna travelled to Munich to sing two performances as Léonor de Guzman in La Favorite, which she debuted at Bayerische Staatsoper in October 2016. Critics applauded the “fabulous Elīna Garanča” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) for her performance as the doomed mistress of King Alfons XI of Castile in Donizetti’s fevered work of tortured love and political intrigue.

The Bayerische Staatsoper production of La Favorite is now available on Bluray and DVD, and will screen in cinemas worldwide beginning this November.

Elīna closed the summer with a concert at the Salzburg Festival, presenting a program of Johannes Brahms, Henri Duparc, and Sergei Rachmaninov with frequent recital partner Malcolm Martineau.
